The Theory Test has two parts; the multiple choice part and the hazard perception part. You must pass both parts to pass the Theory Test. The multiple choice part is done on a touch screen computer and the hazard perception part records your responses to on-screen hazards with the use of a computer mouse button.
Part two - hazard perception

The hazard perception part consists of a series of 14 video clips which feature every day road scenes.
13 of the clips have one developing hazard, and 1 clip will contain two developing hazards. To achieve a high score you'll need to respond to the developing hazard in its early stages, as it begins to develop. The maximum score on each hazard is 5. The pass mark is 44 out of 75.
There are 2 tests that you will need to pass in order to obtain a Full Driving Licence. These are the Theory and Practical Tests.

The Theory Test must be taken first, and passed before a booking for a Practical Test will be accepted. The Theory Test pass certificate lasts for 2 years from date of issue, by which time you must pass the Practical Test. If you do not pass the Practical test within this period, you will need to take the Theory Test again.
Part one - multiple choice

A question and a selection of answers will appear onscreen and you have to select the correct answer to the question by touching the screen. Some questions will require more than one correct answer.
You will be given 57 minutes to answer 50 questions. You will need to correctly answer 43 questions to pass this part.

Your Practical Test consists of an eyesight check, some vehicle safety questions and a general drive including 2 specific manoeuvres. You may also be asked to carry out an emergency stop exercise.

Vehicle safety questions
These are basic safety checks that a driver should carry out to ensure the vehicle is safe for use. You will be asked two questions, one 'show me' and one 'tell me'. One or both questions answered incorrectly will result in one minor driving fault being recorded.

During the test
The driving part of your test lasts about 40 minutes. Your examiner will be looking for an overall safe standard of driving throughout the test. You can make up to a maximum of 15 minor driving faults and still pass the test (16 or more will result in a fail). However, making 1 serious or 1 dangerous fault will result in a fail. If at any time your examiner considers you to be a danger to other road users your test will be stopped.

After the test
When the driving test is over, the examiner will tell you whether you have passed or failed.
